Most Europeans probably won’t have heard of Polokwane, but will be more familiar with its previous name: Pietersburg. A new terminal has been built at the airport to accommodate the flood of visitors the World Cup will bring, and is also titled the ‘Gateway Airport’.

If you are getting a flight to Polokwane and fancy doing some exploring between matches then Polokwane’s location makes it an ideal place from which to fly to Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. If you prefer to stay put, then visit the Polokwane Game reserve with a 20km hiking trail as well as the opportunity to see White Rhino and twenty other species.

Also worth a trip is the Balkone Malapa Museum which is a “living” museum where you can learn about the traditions and culture of the Northern Sotho people. Polokawane itself is an attractive city with wide open streets and green spaces; take time to explore the Savannah Centre with a wide variety of shops and the Hugh Exton Photographic museum which charts the early days of the city.

The climate is pretty much ideal and at World Cup time, expect around 20 degrees Celsius. But don’t be fooled – at 1300m above sea level, it is still easy to burn at that temperature.
