Slovenia: undeniably beautiful, yet surprising modern and forward thinking, this small, central European country retains all its rustic charm, is great value and remains untouched by mass tourism.

Why Slovenia? The great outdoors; hike in lush alpine meadows, ski the spiky mountains, kayak the clear blue rivers and swim in lakes so beautiful they should be banned. Slovenians are also lovely people and despite now being on the euro, it’s still a good value destination. Plus it’s the size of Wales but has huge diversity, and with just 2 million people – it never gets crowded.
Stay: In summer – camping in Bovec by the Soca River is hard to beat. In winter stay in a cosy log cabin in Rogla or Pohorje, and for some hustle and bustle, a converted prison cell at Hostel Celica in beautiful capital Ljubljana makes for an interesting room.
Eat: Wild game stew with dumplings washed down with a Lasko Zlatarog beer. I also love their canned coffee.
Don’t Miss: The Julian Alps – a spectacular range in the west of the country. Also Lake Bohinj and Bled are musts.
Do Miss: Getting into a car accident. Slovenians supposedly drive on the right, but either side seems to be acceptable.
Top Tip: Hire a car and do a road trip. It’s a small country but with vast caves, high mountains, clear lakes and an Adriatic coastline, you can do and see a lot in a week.
