Skyscanner’s musical tour of the world

Skyscanner’s musical tour of the world.

Katy Perry’s infuriatingly catchy single ‘California Gurls’ has been stuck in Skyscanner’s head for a while now, and it seems we’re not the only ones – the song recently spent 6 weeks at no.1 on the US Billboard.

Of course, there are countless other songs which have been penned in tribute to destinations around the world, and if saccharine-sweet pop isn’t your thing, do not fear. Join us on our musical tour of the world!

Berlin, Germany

This uber-cool city has inspired countless artists, most famously David Bowie and Lou Reed in the early 1970’s. Berlin has now established itself as a focal point for progressive alternative music, with acts as diverse as Moderat and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club dedicating song titles to the city. Stay cool with the Berliners this summer.

Los Angeles, USA

The eternal glamour of Los Angeles, and Hollywood in particular, has been immortalised in song many times by artists such as Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Cranberries. Film fans can head to Beverly Hills, the inspiration behind Weezer’s 2005 hit of the same name – the video for this song was filmed at the Playboy Mansion. Sadly, we can’t promise you keys to Hugh Hefner’s pad.

Cairo, Egypt

Africa’s largest city inspired Henry Spaulding’s 1929 classic ‘Cairo Blues’ which has been covered countless times since. 80’s female pop act Bananarama also had an eastern-influenced hit named ‘Cairo’ on their eponymous 1984 album. Cairo has also had a nod in song titles by The Cure and Madness and in more recent years Hot Hot Heat and Digitalism. Rock like an Egyptian.

The romance of Paris is perhaps best summarised by the iconic French singer Edith Piaf, who was born in the French capital and produced a string of classics about life and love in the city. Recent ‘Paris’ hits include Groove Armada, Friendly Fires and Morrissey, the latter in typically flamboyant fashion with ‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’.

New York, USA

Jay Z and Alicia Keys had a worldwide smash hit with ‘Empire State of Mind’ last year, name-checking Sinatra and De Niro and describing how dreams can come true in New York. If you’re in the Big Apple at Christmas time, you can relive the magic of ‘Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues.
