According to figures from tour operator destinationRussia, bookings have increased by 45 percent over the last three years.

The picturesque St Petersburg is the most popular destination among those booking cheap flights to Russia, which represent more than half (57 percent) of bookings.

Meanwhile, over a third (37 percent) were bookings to the capital Moscow.

Martin Chiazza, founder of destinationRussia, said: "As the figures show, Russia is growing rapidly as a tourist destination, which we are extremely pleased about.

"In the past, Russia used to attract predominantly business travellers, whereas now it is young travellers keen to experience the popular sights, such as the Kremlin in Moscow and St Isaac."

Several low cost carriers offer routes to Russia from the UK, such as bmi, who offer low cost flights from Heathrow Airport to Moscow.

The airline recently announced that it will be offering two daily flights to the Russian capital to meet high demand on the route throughout the winter months.
