Lisbon – Portugal’s sunny city
Why? Following the World Expo in 1998, Portugal’s capital has undergone a rebirth. Once dubbed the ‘Poor Man of Europe’, the city has overhauled many of its rundown areas, whilst retaining its old world charm. Spread across seven hills and incorporating an estuary, Lisbon has a great natural setting which is enhanced by its vibrant, cosmopolitan and creative atmosphere.
When? Lisbon is at its best during the long summer evenings when the sidewalk bars, cafes and restaurants bustle with local life. Spring and autumn are quieter times, ideal for lower prices and fewer crowds.
Stay? For a good value Lisbon hotel, try the Hotel Borges – a simple, clean and central hotel, located in the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre. For quirky boutique accommodation, the Inn Solar Do Castelo is a romantic two story pension with an inner courtyard and a well-kept garden. Luxury in Lisbon can be found at the aptly named Pestana Palace where facilities include a pool, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and inner private park.
Lisbon Nightlife: this is a city that takes its evening entertainment seriously; start your evening off in one of the cafes in Chidao, then head over to the central Bairro Alto (Upper Quarter), which is the centre of Lisbon’s after-dark entertainment. Try the hip ‘Bedroom’, quirky ‘Pavilhão Chinês’ or the relaxed ‘Clube da Esquina’. Most bars close between 2am and 4am, but many clubs keep the party alive until sunrise.
