Rainbow Village: the Indonesian community that became an Instagram sensation
If you're not a fan of bright colours then this probably isn't going to be much fun for you, but if you're looking to add another thing to your ever expanding bucket-list, then keep reading.
It's fair to say that Kampung Pelangi was quite a non-descript village but the local government decided that it was time for a small change. Armed with a budget of 300,000,000 Indonesian Rupiah (or £17,000) they transformed 223 houses including their rooftops.
When I say they painted pretty much everything, I mean it. Benches, railings, random things that hang from said railings etc. all got the rainbow treatment too.
But why I hear you cry?
1. Because why not. 2. Kampung Pelangi was considered to be a slum before its rainbow transformation and, thanks to a lick of paint, tourists are flocking to the small village to see it with their very own eyes. Not only that, but it's also being seen as a very successful social project with citizens being encouraged to get involved with the improvements to the surrounding areas (including even more houses being rainbowifed) such as cleaning up the local river. Local businesses are also said to profiting from this change with sales of souvenirs and food rising.
