Nestled in beautifully landscaped gardens on the outskirts of Vilamoura, the resort has five swimming pools (including one for adults only), a gym, mini-market, spa and kids' club. Active types can hire one of the resort's bikes or hit the volleyball court, and there's also a mini-golf course. Eden Resort

The colour scheme and architecture of this beautiful resort was inspired by traditional Portuguese houses. It's ideally located - just a 30-minute-drive from the airport, a 15-minute drive to the golf courses at Balaia and a short walk to the beach. It's been designed with outdoor living in mind, and there are three pools, a tennis court and sprawling, lush gardens to explore. There are just 63 villas so there's plenty of room to spread out your beach towel, although if you fancy heading into nearby Albufeira there's a free shuttle bus service.

Pousada Palacio De Estoi

You'll live like a king (or queen) at this beautiful hotel, a converted eighteenth-century palace filled with neo-Baroque features and ornate plasterwork, and surrounded by immaculately landscaped gardens. This hotel's popular with those who like the finer things in life - there are two tea pavillions and what might just be the two most beautiful swimming pools we've clapped eyes on. And it never feels crowded, because there are just 63 bedrooms (including three suites) and every room has a balcony. Faro and the region's finest beaches are within easy access but this hotel's location - in the heart of Estoi, a small village away from the main tourist drags - makes it a great choice if you're in need of some some downtime.

Conrad Algarve

One of the best spa hotels on the Algarve, this luxurious resort has a Moorish theme and an interior filled with priceless artwork. But back to the spa - or wellness centre as it's referred to here. It's incredibly hi-tech (think ice fountains and experience showers), and includes a sensory zone and technogym. Treatments are carried out with products from Aromatherapy Associates and Australian Intraceuticals (we recommend the oxygen facial). This is another ideal hotel for golfers, thanks to the direct access to the Quinta do Lago golf course, and the services of a dedicated golf concierge.

Tivoli Marina Vilamoura

This is a fantastic place to see how the other half live - the hotel towers over the super yacht-filled Vilamoura Marina and one of Algarve's most beautiful beaches. Here, it's all about relaxation: the therapists at the Angsana Spa by Banyan Tree will quickly soothe away any aches and pains, and the laidback Canela Bar is a brilliant people-watching spot. If you can muster the effort to dig out the credit card, make a beeline for the marina, which is filled with designer boutiques. Rooms are large and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious balconies.
