The best UK hotels for hen dos
Hen do must-haves include the obligatory bride-to-be banners, personalised t-shirts and a catalogue of embarrassing stories about the hen. Oh, and a spectacular venue which will cement the event's place in history as the best hen do ever. But choosing the perfect location isn't always simple, which is why we've come to the rescue, whether you're planning a weekend of hen do games or searching for an organised hen do package at a top spa hotel.
1. The Berkeley
Rooms: From £407* a night per single room
One of the top hen do hotels in the UK, the Berkeley ticks all the boxes. For starters, this top London spa hotel serves up one of the UK's' best afternoon teas. Fondly known as Pret-a-Portea, this decadent feast is served on Wedgwood fine china. The items are regularly changed, although these stunning afternoon teas are always inspired by the colours of the fashion world, so expect calorific treats worthy of Vogue's front cover. The hotel also offers what we think might just be one of the world's best hen do activities. For an added fee, you'll be able to request the hotel's fashion trunk - a leather chest filled with vintage accessories and dresses by designers like Dior and Chanel. You and your girlfriends will able to rummage through the items before selecting accessories and dresses to wear for the entire evening, and the items can also be purchased to take home.
Where: Enniskillen, Northern Ireland
Rooms: From £105* a night per single room
Looking for country house hotels for hen dos in Northern Ireland? Put Killyhevlin at the top of your list. There's an Elemis spa for some pre-wedding pampering, an award-winning restaurant and a wide range of accommodation. Bridal parties will love the luxury lodges: four larchwood cabins perched on the banks of a lake. There are fully-fitted kitchens (complete with super sized fridges for all those bottles of champagne), private decking areas and enormous bathrooms with wet room-style showers. If you're planning a hen do on budget, opt for a room in the main hotel and make sure you check out the great range of hen do packages, which start from just £85 per person.
Where: Auchterarder, Scotland
Rooms: From £378* a night per single room
Gone are the days when hen dos were simply about quaffing Prosecco and plays endless rounds of Mr and Mrs. There's a reason Gleneagles Hotel is one of the Scotland's top hen do hotels and that's the mind-boggling array of activities on offer. Get to know your fellow bridesmaids during an archery lesson, challenge the bride to an off-road driving competition or perfect your hand-eye coordination (essential when it comes to catching that bouquet) with a clay pigeon shooting lesson. If that all sounds too stressful, there's also an enormous spa and several restaurants to choose from. Our favourite is the American Bar, famous for its spectacular - but potent - cocktails.
Rooms: From £123* a night per single room
Bridesmaids planning budget hen dos will love this hotel, set in the rolling hills outside Oxford. The Oxford Belfry offers a wide range of hen do packages - and there's not a rude straw in sight. Our favourites include the champagne-fueled Pink Fizz package and Girls Night In, which includes cocktails and DVDs. It's a relatively small hotel but the spa is huge, with nine treatment rooms and a beautiful relaxation lounge. For summer hen dos, we recommend cocktails in the stunning courtyard.
Rooms: From £68* a night per single room
There are several reasons Bredbury Hall Hotel is regarded as one of Cheshire's best hen do hotels. You'll enjoy stunning country views, but the hotel is only a few miles from the centre of Stockport, so it's the perfect base if your planned hen do activities include a night on the town. The hotel also offers some rather unusual hen do activities, including chocolate-making lessons with naked chocolatiers and lessons in burlesque dancing. The best bit? The hotel has its very own nightclub. Accessed via a secret tunnel, it's open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays but can be hired for private use on other nights.
Rooms: From £480* a night per single room
There are countless reasons this fantastic hotel makes it onto our list, but our favourite one is the mobile cocktail bar, which can be wheeled straight to your room. Available to anyone booking the Screening, WOW or E-WOW suites, the aptly-named Mega Bar opens up to reveal an onyx worktop, deluxe leather paneling, a handcrafted gold-hammered sink, a disco ball and built-in UE Mega Boom speakers to help get the party started in style. Staff will happily stock the bar with drinks of your choice, and you'll even be able to request spectacular extras such as private DJs and mixologists. Cheers!
Where: Newport, Wales
Rooms: From 178* a night per single room
The ten beautiful self-catering lodges at this gorgeous hotel are ideal for pre-wedding celebrations - you'll be able to request private chefs, or arrange for the hotel's spa therapists to provide some group pampering in the comfort of your own accommodation. Not that there's not plenty on offer at this fabulous hotel, which is one of Wales' top golf resorts. There's a mini-golf course and laser quest, along with a spa and hair salon for that all-important pampering. The spa has a wide range of lesser-known treatments to try, including light therapy-based facials.
Rooms: From £16* a night per bed
Looking for budget hen do ideas? You've come to the right place. Rock n' Bowl is one of Bristol's best hostels, and it's ideally situated for hen dos. The colourful, street art-adorned public areas are filled with ping pong tables and pool tables, and there's even a bowling alley. Bristol's best bars and clubs are just a short walk away, there's complimentary fresh coffee in the morning (essential when it comes to curing that hangover from hell), and the 24-hour reception desk means you'll be greeted by a friendly face, no matter what time you stagger in and no matter how many hen do sashes you've got wrapped around your various body parts.
9. The Capital
Rooms: From £301* a night per double room
Hen do games are so yesterday - today's hen party celebrations are all about bonding, learning and getting creative. And this is precisely what The Capital does best. Hen parties can sign up for cocktail-making lessons or oyster masterclasses. Sign up for the latter option and head chef Tom Brown (a contestant on BBC Two’s Great British Menu) will show you and your girls how to prepare oysters and how to pair them with wine. We also recommend the gorgeous afternoon teas, prepared by Claire Clark (of Masterchef and Bake Off Creme De La Creme fame). Enjoy them in the hotel's beautiful sitting room or in the privacy of one of the hotel's private dining rooms.
10. Lord Crewe Arms
Rooms: From £150* a night per double room
The classiest hen dos are held at the Lord Crewe Arms, a beautiful moorland hotel which is a great option for food-themed hen dos. The hotel offers private cooking demonstrations, wine tasting sessions and private dinner parties in a beautiful gatehouse which was once connected to an ancient abbey. The hotel's remote settings makes it a great choice for smaller, more intimate hen do celebrations. For ultimate wow factor, opt for one of the suites. They're tucked inside historic miners' cottages, and features include roll-top baths, wood-burning stoves and spiral staircases.
Where: Isle of Arran, Scotland
Rooms: From £178* a night per double room
If raucous nights out and kiss-me-quick hats aren't your thing, hold your hen do at the Auchrannie Resort on the Isle of Arran. If the bride-to-be is on a pre-fitness exercise regime, she'll love the available activities, which include mountain biking and gorge walking. Any aches and pains can be soothed away at the spa, which also offers a range of packages designed for hen dos, including champagne-themed affairs. For extra privacy, book one of the private lodges, which have roaring log fires and spectacular views over this beautiful, windswept island.
12. The Lowry
Rooms: From £172* a night per double room
If you're organising a spa hen weekend, the Lowry is for you. Its QMS Skin Spa is regarded as one of the best spas in Manchester, and it can now be booked out in its entirety by groups of six or more people. You'll be given robes and slippers upon arrival, followed by a healthy smoothie. In between treatments (which you'll choose beforehand) you'll get full use of the gym, sauna and relaxation room, and you'll even be able to choose your very own soundtrack. Perhaps unsurprisingly, "Chapel of Love" is apparently a very popular option.
