Florence: home to some of the world’s greatest artistic treasures
Why? Florence’s museums, art galleries, palaces, cathedral and churches offer some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. Home to some of the most gifted artists of the Renaissance, Florence offers magic corners everywhere you go.
Florence’s cultural attractions are overwhelming and can be too much if you don’t plan in advance. A good starting point is the ‘Florence and Tuscany’ National Geographic travel guide. Also very useful is VisitFlorence.com where you can find extensive information on the city.
Take it easy and don’t rush from one gallery to another, walking through Florence is an exquisite pleasure.
When? Both May to early June and September to October are great times to visit Florence as the days are warm, long, but not overbearingly hot. Even though Florence is busy all year round, try to avoid the summer months as the city is packed with tourists. The temperatures can easily reach 30C (90 degrees Fahrenheit) and flight prices are higher.
Stay: Florence is an expensive city and has a huge range of accommodation on offer. You could spend days online trying to decide where to go, comparing prices and locations. Don’t waste your time; Hotel San Giovanni has got everything you’re looking for. First class friendly service and good prices, and it is located in the heart of Florence’s historical centre (the cathedral square).
Florence Nightlife: It is hard work trying to keep up with all the cultural offerings in Florence and before considering a beer go for a bite at one of the favorite restaurants in town: Trattoria Da Garibardi. They cook the most amazing ‘Bistecca alla Fiorentina’ (bbq steak).
An excellent spot for romance and a nice dinner after a long day walking is the Jazz Club Piano Bar which offers a very laid-back scene. You’ll need to pay an £8 membership fee to get in and the drinks are rather expensive but it is worth it – the atmosphere and quality of the bands are awesome.
There are also plenty of great pubs and restaurants in other areas of town, so go for a wander to explore – Via de Benci is one which is well worth visiting.
