Introducing the flight search geeks that make Skyscanner work
**What do you do at Skyscanner?**
North American Country Manager – I’m responsible for marketing, sales, PR and content on Skyscanner.com, our US and Canadian website.
What kind of flight geek are you?
Localis(z)ation Geek…and a Social Media Geek.
What best generally describes your travel style?
I’m a wanderer – anytime, anyplace.
What’s your ideal holiday?
Easy: I bring a lot of black and light cotton. I prefer clothes that fit loosely, comfortably and don’t wrinkle. “Ironing” and “vacation” tend not to fall in the same sentence with me. I love getting away from the beaten path and experiencing local culture; I’m not a fan of tourist traps…or shopping.
Who’s your ideal travel companion?
My partner, Gavin.
Do you fly with children?
No, as I don’t trust their credentials or ability to see over the instrument panel.
How do you decide where you want to go?
Throw a dart at a map…nah, just kidding. Seriously, I tend to go to the US as I have my family there. I prefer to travel to places that I haven’t been though.
How do you decide when you want to go?
Coming from the tropics, I need my ‘sun fix’ in winter. So I tend to plan trips back home when Edinburgh is dark and cold. I like staying in the UK during the Spring/Summer; it may be brief, but it’s amazing!
What annoys you most is totally awesome about planning holidays?
Getting used to the idea of being able to take 14-whole days off in a row!
What are you doing in your job at Skyscanner to help?
I am working to bring Skyscanner’s agnostic-approach to flight-price search to the USA. Though we’re not the first meta-search in the market, I believe that no one does what we do…or as well as we do it. The US & Canada are already taking well to what we offer.
What’s your favourite thing about the Skyscanner site?
I LOVE being able to evaluate flight prices for the year with one click: nice!
What’s your dream feature?
I would like to be standing somewhere, then point my phone in a direction and have the Skyscanner AR app show me the cheapest flight originating from where I am standing to any city in that general direction. Could be fun.
Favourite websites apart from Skyscanner and why?
I really like Gawker.com and TheDailyShow.com for a comedic-slant on the news, BBC for my news-fix and TheFoodNetwork.com when I need inspiration for dinner.
What’s the geekiest thing about you? Your secret geek shame?
I really thought that SecondLife was going to be cool…yeah, jury’s out on that one. That, and I browse the news from my iphone in bed.
Worst travel experience?
I was going on a cruise with the family, only to realise—after a 4.5 hour drive to Miami—that I had left my passport at home. Fortunately, this was before the more stringent travel policies in the US, so they let me go with my US id card and I was able to have my birth certificate faxed to the ship. Almost cost my entire family their vacation!
