Introducing the flight search geeks that make Skyscanner work
**1. What do you do at Skyscanner?**
I am the development manager, which means I manage the projects to add new functionality to the site, and I manage the geeks who build the functionality!
2. What kind of geek you are?
Flexible geek I like to think!
3. What best generally describes your travel style?
I know where I want to go, but I’m flexible on when.
4. What’s your ideal holiday?
Two to three weeks in St Lucia at my favourite resort (don’t want everyone to go there so no more details than that!); swimming, sun bathing, scuba diving, eating and drinking.
5. Who’s your ideal travel companion?
My husband, Alan.
6. Do you fly with children?
No, not usually.
7. How do you decide where you want to go?
My travel choices are based on a combination of what we want to do, previous experience and recommendations from friends. The desire to do some diving has influenced us a lot in the past, and has sent us to the Caribbean, Belize and Seychelles. However after ‘finding’ St Lucia it’s been difficult to go anywhere else!
8. How do you decide when you want to go?
Firstly, we travel outside school holidays. Secondly, just when we think we need a holiday! Winter sun is always a temptation.
9. What annoys you most about planning holidays?
The fact that I have to do it. Putting all the bits together (I usually book separate flights, hotel etc), is the most difficult bit, especially if there are no direct flights somewhere.
10. What are you doing in your job at Skyscanner to help?
We have some plans to expand functionality to help booking multi-trip tickets (mixing budget and scheduled) and also places close to your original choice that may make suitable alternatives. Watch this space.
11. What’s your favourite thing about the Skyscanner site?
The year and month views of prices – it’s a really handy tool if you are flexible about dates.
12. What’s your dream feature?
I would love to be able to put in a particular event happening somewhere in the world, and get options of how to get there and where to stay; examples could be St Lucia’s Jazz festival or the World Cup in South Africa.
13. Favourite websites apart from Skyscanner and why?
CelticFC.net to keep up to date with news from my team!
14. What’s the geekiest thing about you? Your secret geek shame?
I am a football geek. I love all things football and will always be watching a game on TV, no matter where it is being played or who is playing. However I also have a season ticket for Celtic and go every week, home or away, to watch them – no matter how painful or pleasurable!
15. Worst travel experience?
Travelling to Valencia from Edinburgh, via Paris Charles De Gaulle. The inbound flight was late leaving Edinburgh, so we missed our connection in Paris and got to the gate just in time to see the plane leaving the stand.
We were then put on a flight to Barcelona, and a further flight to Valencia. We eventually arrived in Valencia – minus our luggage, which didn’t turn up until the day before we were due to come home!
