First section of Helsink-Vantaa's terminal upgrade opens

The initial section of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport’s new terminal complex has opened.

Serving intercontinental traffic and passengers, the extension was opened on August 27th and features new, larger waiting areas.

Passengers will also benefit from new toilets and two new passenger gates.

It is the first phase of the terminal complex to be completed, with the last of the renovations due to be completed before the end of the year.

This month, the My City Helsinki restaurant complex will be opened in addition to new shops.

Arguably the most luxurious facilities are being left until last, with passengers able to try the new Via Lounge and Via Spa premises from December.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport hopes that the improvements to the terminal building will speed up the operation of transfer flights and improve passengers’ experiences of the airport.

One finished, the airport will be capable of handling between 15 million and 16 million passengers each year.

In 2008, almost 13.5 million people used the airport.
