Summer is here and the festivals are coming. We all know about Glastonbury, Reading and T in the Park but if you’re after something a little different this year, Skyscanner takes a look at some of the lesser known music festivals of the world.
**Rock Ness **(Dores, Scotland)
When: 12th, 13th, 14th June 2009
Line Up: The Flaming Lips, Basement Jaxx, Orbital, Placebo
Around 35,000 people are set to head to the shores of infamous Loch Ness to enjoy the mix of world class performers alongside heavyweight DJs. With stunning views of the Scottish Highlands from your tent, this is one of Scotland’s’ finest music events.
Isle of Wight Festival (Seaclose Park, Isle of Wight, England) ** **
When: 12th 13th 14th June
Line Up: The Prodigy, Stereophonics, Neil Young, Razorlight
One of the UK’s first big music festivals, it began back in 1968 when Marc Bolan sang to a bunch of hippies in a cold stubble field, but after only three years, the festival was discontinued due to problems with overcrowding. It was revived in 2002 and has been going strong ever since, even winning the ‘Best Major Festival’ award in 2007.
Hellfest (Clisson, France) ** **
When: 19th, 20th, 21st June 2009
Line up: Manowar, Anthrax, Marylin Manson
If you like your music heavy and metallic, than Hellfest is the festival for you. Almost half of the punters attending the festival come from outside of France, creating a truly international crowd. With three open air stages, t-shirt clad fans will be moshing to the sounds of the world’s best metal bands.
Heineken Open’er Festival **(Babie Doly Airfield, Poland)**
When: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th July 2009
Line Up: Arctic Monkeys, Basement Jaxx, Faith No More, Kings of Leon
One of Poland’s largest festivals, Open’er has got the complete package. The Baltic coast provides the sun, sea and sand, plus plenty of space, and the four stages play host to over 100 acts which include some of Poland’s hottest new talent, along with international greats.
Soundwave Festival (Petrcane, Croatia) ** **
When: 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th July 2009
Line Up: DJ Yoda, Hexstatic, The Bays
Set on the beautiful backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, this dance music festival takes place near the seaside town of Zadar, on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Here music fans will enjoy four days of music, spread over three arenas and a boat – all under the sun and next to a warm blue sea.
Italia Wave Love Festival (Livormo, Italy) ** **
When: 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th July 2009
Line Up: Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Placebo, Chemical Brothers
Held on the coastal town of Livorno in Tuscany, four stages welcome an excellent line up of electronic and guitar based music and even better, the concerts are either free or very cheap. There’s also a range of theatre, comedy and music workshops to give revellers a chance to get involved, and for the super energetic, there’s even a surf and sport area too.
Fuji Rock Festival ** (Naeba, Japan)**
When: 24th, 25th, 26th July 2009
Line Up: Oasis, Franz Ferdinand, Weezer, Public Enemy
Japan’s answer to Glastonbury, Fuji Rock festival is a three day music extravaganza. Set in the hills of Naeba ski resort, you’ll find ice cold streams to cool off in, forest paths to explore and off course the best in international and Japanese live music playing across 10 stages and tents. Just watch out for the bears and snakes!
