Doncaster Sheffield Airport has outlined its intension for large-scale expansion in its Draft Airport Expansion Plan.
The airport wants to expand its passenger and freight business by increasing the size of its terminal building and constructing new cargo facilities, while also improving public transport links to and from Doncaster and Sheffield.
Commenting on the plan, Peter Nears, director of strategic planning at Peel Holdings, the airport’s operator, said it was another "significant milestone" in the airport’s development.
"Through these plans, the airport hopes to become the airport of choice for business and leisure travellers from across the region to maximise its contribution to the regeneration and renaissance of the Sheffield city region," he said.
Independent forecasts suggest that the number of passengers using the airport will reach 6.6 million per year in 2016, with that figure set to rise to 10.8 million by 2030. The amount of cargo is respected to rise to 60,000 and 120,000 tonnes respectively.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport is Yorkshire’s second-largest behind Leeds Bradford. It currently handles 1.1 million passengers per year.
