Delta, Northwest in merger rumour

Two US air carrier giants Delta and Northwest Airlines are close to a merger that could create the world's largest airline.

Two US air carrier giants Delta and Northwest Airlines are close to a merger that could create the world’s largest airline.

The two firms are thought to have shared details of a merger with the Air Line Pilots Association, which would create a huge company that would leapfrog American Airlines as the world’s biggest airline. Delta is currently America’s third largest carrier by traffic, while Northwest is ranked fifth.

According to Bloomberg, an announcement on the deal could come within a few weeks.

One chief concern for both airlines is the support of the pilots for any deal. A merger could mean that many pilots may lose their seniority, which helps to determine pay, work schedules and the size of the aircraft they can fly.If they join another carrier, pilots generally cannot transfer their seniority.

However, experts have suggested that pilots may support the merger, should the airlines guarantee some job protection and higher wages.
