Published by Lonely Planet, this classic coffee table book is devoted to 200 of the world’s greatest cities.

Featuring both the obvious (New York, London, Sydney etc…) and the obscure (Esfahan, Maputo and Beira), each city has been given its own double page spread to shine.

This is an inspirational book for the Jet Set; the photography is high quality and the text is short and punchy. Each city has been assigned a Lonely Planet ranking to accompany the vital stats, defining experiences, strengths and weaknesses.

There are a few places that you wouldn’t expect to find in a book about the world’s best cities; for example Bled in Slovenia which, though very beautiful, could hardly be considered a city. Also some of the apparent ‘weaknesses’ attributed to each city are slightly strange; for example, an apparent weakness of Swansea is its “rural economic problems”.

However, most travellers (armchair and active wanderers) can happily spend hours flitting from page to page, hunting for inspiration for their next city break. The combination of beautiful pictures and snappy copy that we’ve come to expect from the Lonely Planet, makes this an excellent reference book with a long shelf life, and it will appeal strongly to most globetrotters.
