Cheap flights carrier bmibaby will launch new seasonal flights to Newquay from Birmingham on Friday (May 22nd).
To celebrate the launch of the new route, the airline is setting up a surf simulator in the city’s Brindley Place between 12:00 BST and 14:00, where passers-by will be able to practise their surfing skills.
The route, which runs until September 20th, will operate from Birmingham on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with bmibaby expecting to carry more than 20,000 passengers on the route over the course of the summer.
Crawford Rix, bmibaby’s managing director, said that the launch of flights to Cornwall "is great news for Birmingham".
"No longer will a trip to Newquay mean a four-and-a-half hour trek down the M5, but merely a short flight lasting just over an hour from Birmingham International Airport."
Paul Kehoe, the airport’s chief executive, said that the route would allow Newquay to become a weekend break destination for people living in the midlands.
Bmibaby recently celebrated six years of flying from Manchester Airport, where it has flown close to five million passengers since its launch.
