Start-up carrier Athens Airways will launch its maiden services from spring 2009, according to reports.
The airline’s initial flights will be operated on a charter basis, with scheduled services set to begin in April in time for the ever-popular Greek holiday season.
According to a report from Alternative Airlines: "Athens Airways sees itself as an operator that will offer a more upmarket product on high yield routes and also believes it will have the edge over its rivals in this respect."
The website said that the new airline will acquire four Embraer aircraft from cheap flights carrier Flybe, with the first set to be delivered in the coming weeks.
Greece’s government announced earlier this month that Athens Airways was one of 16 bidders hoping to take over Olympic Airlines’ operations after it was revealed that the company would be liquidated.
The start-up carrier is also interested in acquiring Olympic’s ground handling and technical maintenance undertakings.
