Advanced XML technology is allowing airlines to integrate car rental ancillary product into their flight bookings systems, an online travel expert has claimed.
Arthur de Perthuis, head of online travel sales at EMEA – Hertz Europe, told Eye For Travel that savvy airlines were now able to totally outsource their car rental deals, with low cost airline leading the charge.
He told the site: "With the absence of the loyalty programme, they [low budget airlines] compensate by investing in new revenue streams which were quicker to implement than create a traveller database. Until an airline embraces XML technology, they will not benefit from the true additional ancillary revenue opportunity. Being able to dynamically offer real-time availability is key to maximising car rental penetration."
He added that major Hertz flag carrying partners such as Air France are also developing innovative services for passengers and taking advantage of the new era of airline booking and car rental collaboration.
Nevertheless, Mr De Perthuis noted that carrier strategy is not as focussed on ancillary revenue channels as on the retention of high yield leisure and business travellers.
