Excited? Of course you are – it’s elementary (sorry, had to be done! – Ed). To celebrate the release of the new Sherlock film, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, this weekend (16th December), Skyscanner reveals 5 must-see locations for die-hard Holmes n’ Watson fans.

1. Strasbourg, France

Sherlock Holmes fans would do well to choose Strasbourg for a handy weekend break. The opening sequence of the new film is shot in the French city, especially around Place de la Cathédrale. Strasbourg was also one of the main locations for the filming of 1958 war film The Young Lions, featuring a truly stellar cast of Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Dean Martin and Lee Van Cleef. 2. Bourne Woods, England

One of the major locations for the second Sherlock Holmes film is Bourne Woods, near Farnham in Surrey, England. This magnificent area of heath and woodland is a well-used film location, being the set for one of the most memorable scenes in modern movie history – the opening battle in Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe. 3. Didcot Railway Centre, England

In the new film, Holmes (Robert Downey Jnr.) and his sidekick Dr. Watson (Jude Law) again battle their arch enemy, Professor Moriarty. One place where they’re in action is Didcot Railway Centre in Oxfordshire, England. Home to an ‘iconic’ power station, Didcot is also hallowed ground for trainspotters. 4. Old Royal Naval College, London, England

The Old Royal Naval College is one of London’s most famous riverside landmarks, and perhaps the great baroque masterpiece of English architecture.
