Mauritius is the perfect place to get back to nature. Spot some pink pigeons and giant tortoises on the Ile aux Aigrettes nature reserve just off the South East coast, or go dolphin watching off the West Coast. Although most people book flights to Mauritius for the beaches, the countryside has lots to offer the adventurous traveller too. Zip-line through the forest or go quad biking in the mountains. Visit the extinct volcano at Curepipe, and then indulge in some shopping at the local marketplace for that must have souvenir.

Remember to bring small coins in case the conductor doesn’t have change. Metered taxis are also reasonable and a good way to see the island, but never get in an unlicensed cab.
