Flights to Armenia
Mountainous and landlocked, Armenia is a country full of astounding natural beauty. It also has plenty of history. If you look at a map of ancient Anatolia you’ll see that Armenia is the only country that’s kept its borders over three thousand years. It was the first country in the world to embrace Christianity; it was once part of the Soviet Union; and its people have experienced genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.
Despite its tragic history, Armenia is very forward looking. It’s a country which is very friendly towards tourists, with plenty of boutique accommodation, lots of breathtaking sites to see, and an intriguing culture which straddles east and west.
There are two international airports in Armenia. If you’re visiting the country, one of the two will be your first entry point.
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN)
Zvartnots International Airport serves the city of Yerevan. There are no direct flights from the UK, but Alitalia offers indirect options The airport is the busiest in the country, and has recently been refurbished to a high standard. In 2013 the airport was awarded the title of best airport in the Russian Commonwealth.
Yerevan itself is a wonderful capital city, with more than a hint of the Mediterranean about it. The locals enjoy a relaxing pace of life, chilling out in cafes in the park and cruising along the boulevards in their fancy cars. There’s plenty of culture, with loads of art galleries, theatres, and excellent bars where you can catch some live music. The city also makes a great base for getting out and discovering the rest of the country. Pay a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Geghard Monastery, which is partially carved out of the nearby mountain.
Shirak International Airport (LWN)
There are no direct flights from the UK to Shirak, only from Russia. Flights from Moscow- Domodedovo and Saint Petersburg are fairly frequent. The airport serves the city of Gyumri and the surrounding Shirak region. The architecture in the city is notably Russian, particularly the churches and the imposing Black Fortress which was the first line of defence against the Ottoman Empire. If you can’t fly into Shirak International Airport, don’t worry: you can take a day trip to Gyumri from Yerevan.
