Travel. It’s one of life’s simple pleasures. But, ooof, planning it can feel like hard work. For the last 18 years we’ve been on a mission to empower every traveller with innovative tools, insights and experiences that help people get to where they’re going, so they can spend more time out exploring the world, and less time anxiously bouncing around 25 browser tabs and endless spreadsheets. Our traveller-first approach drives everything we do and it’s never been more important than it is today.

When we launched as a flight comparison site back in 2003, we changed the game by helping travellers feel smart, like they were in on a secret, that promise hasn’t changed. And today, while we’re a world leader in travel, with millions of people using our products every single day we know there’s so much more we can be doing.

Being part of Skyscanner means joining a team hell bent on building the world’s most innovative, and helpful travel experiences possible. We’re hugely ambitious and believe we have the chance to genuinely challenge and disrupt the industry.

As a Principal Staff Engineer, you’ll bring the technical leadership to large scale architectural implementations. This means being able to provide technical guidance, support and drive iterative delivery through thin vertical slices of features to delivered to real users in production… every day. It means clarifying, elaborating and iterating on the Skyscanner engineering technology roadmap and designs. You’ll also collaborate with Principal Engineers in other areas of the business, to influence technical direction across the organisation. It means participating in education, mentoring and/or coaching programs for the wider engineering community.

Skyscanner is a place where your senior-level talents will really come into play. They’ll cover areas such as Java, NoSQL databases, SQL, Pathon, AWS, Kubernetes, Istio.  You’ll still be hands on coding, staying up to date with the latest technical trends and languages and be fluent in one or more programming languages. And you’ll be completely comfortable using Agile and Lean methodologies. With these skills, you’ll be an expert in your domain, inspiring teams to think smarter to deliver software quickly and shape our technical direction. Value and quality will be your obsessions: you’ll be a champion for world-class engineering and iterative software delivery.

Who could have predicted what 2020 has brought? Travel has been impacted considerably, but Skyscanner’s unwavering commitment to our travellers and partners remains as strong as ever. We weathered the storm and now moving forward helping our travellers. Skyscanner’s unwavering commitment to our travellers and partners remains as strong as ever. We’re confident that our travellers’ appetite to explore the world will return, and we will need your expertise to help us make travel more sustainable and straightforward, along with all the new considerations of an evolving industry.
