Montclair is a typical New Jersey town with Victorian houses lining the streets, pot holes, and the classic main street with local shops, restaurants, and at least 1 bagel and pizza place. And, it's only a half hour from the city by train. Try Raymond's or Toast for brunch and Joey Thai for dinner. Walk down Church Street in the center of town and grab a cupcake, then stroll down Bloomfield Ave and pop in and out of the sweetest little shops, chalk full of organic foods, like teas and pastries, hand made home goods, and if all else fails, a really good Urban Outfitters (their sale section is beyond). Yes, New Jersey is often the butt of every New York joke, but that's because New Yorkers never venture past the Hudson river. They don't get to see the gorgeous lawns, backyards, pools, and great public schools, all they can see is industry and people with big hair..... which it can happily supply as well. Montclair is sweet and charming. A day spent there is a day well spent.
