I'm a little bias, I was born here but I like visiting the University of Kansas for some history, Clinton lake for fishing and mountain biking, and downtown for some walking and shopping during the day, and drinking socializing at night. Get a sub at Yellow Sub for lunch and for dinner grab a pizza at Pizza Shuttle can't beat the $5 one topping ten inch pizza and drink walking special.
The train made a stop in Lawrence while I was traveling on Amtrak's Southwest Chief Train Number 4 from Los Angeles to Chicago.
This small college town packs in a wide variety of nightlife, nature trails and has a growing art scene. It has been the launchpad for NBA stars from Wilt Chamberlain to Paul Pierce while offering a laid-back counterculture that attracts world famous bands and served as a playground for Beat Generation legend William S. Burroughs. While all signs point to Massachusetts Street for its long list of bars, restaurants, shops and people watching, you can find a rapidly growing art scene in the East Lawrence Industrial District, a few blocks east of "Mass Street," as the locals call it. Artists' hideaways open up to the public on Final Fridays (last Friday of each month) where you can donate a few bucks for some beer or wine while seeing art (paintings, sculpture, photography, music and more) that ranges from the strange and absurd to iconic Midwest majesty. Need some exercise and a place to picnic with your sweetheart? Hit up the leash-free dog park behind the Clinton Lake Dam just west of town or hike a 4-mile nature trail on the far west side of the lake. Or walk or bike along the Kaw River just north of downtown, maybe drop in to Frank's North Star a few blocks east of Highway 59 for a tasty cocktail. Or join the legions of fans at Allen Fieldhouse where the University of Kansas Jayhawks historic basketball program has thrived since the days of basketball creator James Naismith. On my short list are: The Bourgeois Pig for my favorite coffee and perhaps the best cocktails in town; The Granada for live concerts; catch an independent movie or concert at historic Liberty Hall; and get some fantastic Thai food at Zen Zero.
Lawrence is one of my favorite towns of all time. I've spent many days in Lawrence checking out different concerts or just walking up and down Mass. St. The people in Lawrence are some of the nicest I've met, and I always look forward to my next visit.
