Hotels in Carlsbad

Sun, sea, and LEGO attract plenty of visitors to this pleasant Californian city, affectionately known by locals as “the village by the sea”. There are lots of hotels in Carlsbad to choose from, whether you’re planning a family holiday, a trip with friends, or a romantic getaway.

Carlsbad has been a popular tourist destination for more than a century. It was even named after a famous Czech spa resort, Karlsbad. When a 19th Century local discovered that the water in the region was packed with beneficial minerals, he built a swanky hotel (which is still standing) and the visitors have been flowing into town ever since.

Carlsbad is popular with a huge range of people, from Los Angeles and San Diego day trippers to European tourists. During the summer the city is celebrated for its beach, while the inland presence of LEGOLAND California makes it a year round favourite with families.

Most people choose to base themselves in Carlsbad Village, the city’s downtown district which is known for its nightlife, shopping, and restaurants. Strict development policies were put into place during the 1980’s, so the city has an old fashioned Californian beach town vibe. If you enjoy active holidays, base yourself in La Costa. This lovely inland area is known for its tennis and golf resorts, and has a few lovely spa hotels too.

There’s plenty to keep nature lovers entertained. Carlsbad is home to three of San Diego County’s largest lagoons, which are lined with miles of excellent walking trails. The lagoons offer a great place to go bird-watching, too. Carlsbad’s beaches are one of the city’s biggest draws, so it’s surprising to find that the region is home to seven miles of undeveloped coastline. You can get away from the crowds for a day and enjoy surfing at Tamarack Reef, relax on some peaceful white sands, or enjoy a stroll along a cliff top path.

There are lots of great places to stay in Carlsbad. Luxury travellers are spoiled for choice, with a huge array of wonderful resorts and high end spa hotels to choose from. There’s a good selection of budget and mid-range options too, with plenty of big American brands as well as some independent inns, guesthouses, and B&Bs.
