Derry Hotels (Londonderry)

Derry has risen from the flames of its troubled past to become an upbeat, cosmopolitan, and picturesque city. Whether you’re interested in history and culture or shopping and nightlife, you’ll find something to keep yourself occupied in Derry.

In 2013 Derry had a pretty good year. The city was awarded the title of UK Capital of Culture, and also secured itself fourth place in Lonely Planet’s list of top cities to visit. 2013 might be over, but there’s still plenty going on in Derry. Book your hotel today and get ready to discover Northern Ireland’s second city.

Like Budapest, Derry is split into two districts by its river. The Foyle separates The Waterside and The Cityside: Waterside is traditionally where the city’s unionist population lives, while Cityside is generally nationalist. The pedestrian Peace Bridge, which was built in 2011, has gone some way to bring the city’s two communities together: and makes it easy for tourists to navigate between the two neighbourhoods.

The Cityside is where you’ll find most of Derry’s attractions, such as the city walls (the best preserved in Ireland) and Bogside: an area known for its political murals. The city centre is small enough to get around on foot, and has plenty of shops, restaurants, and hotels. There’s also a lively nightlife, with plenty of traditional pubs and swanky cocktail bars. There are also a few trendy restaurants and hotels in Waterside, slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

If you want to party in Derry, forget about St Patrick’s Day: Halloween is where it’s at. Derry hosts a massive carnival on 31st October, attracting thousands of visitors from across the world. Fancy dress is compulsory, as is staying out in the bars until the wee small hours. Hotel prices can rocket at this time of year, so unless you’re planning on joining the celebrations it might be worth rescheduling your trip.
