City blessed with mountain as the backdrop and sea as the foreground. The latter often associated with great abundance. Sept is the whaling period.

So beautiful and right near the shark cage diving! The great whites are amazing to see but the water on South Africa is very cold. An amazing experience overall.

Hermanus is the one of the best places for land based whale watching in the Western Cape. It is also a lovely town to spend a few days in. There are plenty of good places to eat and shop with a range of accommodation options from backpacker dorms to luxury hotels. From Hermanus you can easily travel to nearby Gaansbai for some shark cage diving or whale watching from a boat. You can take a boat to do whale watching from the New Harbour in Hermanus, which I did, but this was not so good as the other boat trip I took from Gaansbai. There are some nice cliff path walks in Hermanus from which you will often be able to see the whales, in season. I remember sitting on a bench for hours, on my first trip there, amazed at the sight of a Southern Right putting on a show of breaches and tail slaps. A must see place if you're in the Cape Town area.
