Hotels in Maderia

Home of football hero Ronaldo (and your granny's favourite dessert wine), the Portuguese island of Madeira is a popular destination for sun-seekers and serious walkers. The volcanic archipelego sits just off the north coast of Africa, and is blessed with a sub-tropical climate. The high cliffs, stony beaches and gorgeous gardens ensure that every trip to Madeira is an Instagrammers dream.

Where to stay in Madeira

Before you choose a hotel in Madeira, you need to decide where on Madeira island you want to stay. We've put together a quick guide to some of the most popular destinations.

Most Madeira hotels are in Funchal, the island's capital. Funchal dates back to 1424, and sits on the island's sunny south coast. Hotels in Funchal are perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the action, with great hiking in the hills and historic attractions in the city centre: including an impressive cathedral.

Porto Santo

Madeira Island's neighbour, Porto Santo, is a popular destination for scuba divers and beach lovers. The long sandy beach is ideal for soaking up the Madeiran sun, while the Pedreira viewpoint offers heady views of the archipelego. Don't miss out on a trip to the town of Vila Baleira: the Christopher Columbus House Museum is set inside the former home of the famous explorer.

Porto Moniz

The small town of Porto Moniz sits on the north coast of Madeira Island. It's famous for the natural pools along its coast, formed by cooling lava. The jagged rocks provide the perfect backdrop for canonballs.

Camara de Lobos

According to legend, this suburb of Funchal is where the Portuguese explorer João Gonçalves Zarco landed when he discovered the Madeira islands. Hotels in Camara de Lobos are ideal for those looking for a peaceful break, as it's very much a fishing and farming area.

Ribeira Brava

Head off the tourist trail to Ribeira Brava – a place that's usually only visited by day trippers from Funchal. This town happens to be one of Madeira Islands' sunniest spots, with a pebbled beach and a charming fruit market. It's a great destination for honeymooners.
