Downhill From Portachuelo to Llanganuco Lake Awesome views easy to medium difficulty 3 hour descent soil: little stones all the way down. To get there you need to hire a driver to take you from huaraz 3 hour drive. If it rains it can get really slippery, Its so exciting by far the best way to get to Llanganuco
My favourite spot in Peru. The town itself is nestled among snowy peaks at any time of the year and has a nice river running through; has amazing daily markets, fresh juices on your doorstep, maca for the healthy, lots of crafts and clothes (much cheaper than in Lima). The town also has the best cafes, not only in terms of food but of cosiness and warmth: fireplaces, plenty of books and magazine to read from. Lots of nice night bars too, this is the place to sample the Peruvian Pisco. This is also a great base for trekking – days or longer. My favourite: Huayhuash. Beware of agencies organising trekking, some of them will charge you lots and not provide much; others are amazing, just ask fellow travellers.
Only had limited time, but did the Santa Cruz trek. Really beautiful country... Best place for some mountain trekking in peru.
Peru offers tons of places beside the macchu picchu. Try Huaraz for some of the most beautiful tracks in South America.
