Portovenere's Harbor (on the Gulf of Poets) is lined with brightly colored houses and narrow medieval streets lead up the hill to the Castle or over to the San Piedro Church on a stunning promontory. The Church was once the site to the Temple of Venus (Venere in Italian) of which Portovenere gets its name. Gayle and I arrived via tourist boat, climbed up the hill behind the Castle, entered the Old Town through its ancient gate, enjoyed a slice on a small plaza within, wished we would have brought our swimming suits for a dip in Byron's Cove, enjoyed a brief respite within the Church, and randomly wandered the streets in search of signature tiles, interesting residential doors, and cats. It was a pleasant field trip for our Cinque Terre HQ, and well worth your time visit.
