The Shannon region of western Ireland is one of the most beautiful areas in the Emerald Isle. Here, visitors will find cliffs, medieval castles and a rich history. Named for the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, Shannon is part of County Clare. The town of Shannon itself is small, encompassing Shannon Airport and several industrial parks, but you can find many hotels near the airport. Most of the action and sites are in the nearby town of Bunratty, with its medieval streets and famous Bunratty Castle. You won't want to miss the famous Cliffs of Moher or the flora and fauna in Burren National Park.
Bunratty is the ideal base for visiting western Ireland and for finding hotels in Shannon. The cities of Galway and Connemara are within an easy day trip. Last-minute hotels in Shannon can usually be found here.

I've only been to Shannon to make a flight connection, but I like it because it's one of the first places to stop on a transatlantic crossing.
