This small town used to be the center of Hungary with a royal castle in the 15th century. You can still visit the ruins of the palace of King Matthias or go up to the top of the mountain and visit the citadel that rules the landscape of the Danube Band. If you go there in June, you may catch the Palace games when for 3-4 days people dress up as citizens of Visegrad from the golden era of the town.

Visegrad is, without a doubt, one of the most dramatic sites that I have seen in central Europe. This fortress and castle, set on a curve of the Danube that throughout ancient and medieval times held military significance, is both beautiful and fascinating. Dracula was actually held here for over ten years as a prisoner of the Hungarian King. You can get here by taking a Danube river boat from Pest. You then walk up a steep hill to the castle at the top. There are also a number of great restaurants overlooking the river.

The Danube Bend in Visegrad, Hungary. It's at moments like this when I feel exhilarated, insignificant, meditative, peaceful and blessed all at the same time.
