Hotels in Avignon

Breathtaking buildings, world class art galleries, and gastronomy galore make Avignon an excellent holiday destination, whether you’re planning a weekend break or a longer stay.

Avignon is packed with traditional French charm, boasting a good mix of tree lined boulevards and winding medieval streets. There are pretty squares, pavement cafes, and beautiful gardens which offer panoramic views across the Rhone valley. Some of France’s best vineyards are just a short car ride away, in Chateauneuf des Papes.

Like most French cities, Avignon has an excellent cafe and bistro culture. Place Pie is where the locals flock to sip coffee in the sunshine, and to party in the evening as the bars become livelier. Les Halles market is a must-visit for foodies, with stalls selling everything from locally produced cheese to fresh fruits and veg.

Of course, Avignon’s biggest draw is the annual arts festival, which takes place every July. It’s the oldest festival in France and involves all kinds of cultural entertainment, from contemporary dance and cinema displays to opera performances and live music. The edgy fringe festival, “off”, takes place at the same time.

History is around every corner in Avignon, which is unsurprising considering that during the Middle Ages it was one of the most important cities in Western Europe. The imposing Palais des Papes serves as a reminder of Avignon’s glory days, during the 14th Century, when the papacy briefly relocated here from Rome.

Before the popes arrived, Avignon was already famous for its bridge. The Pont Saint-Benezet now lies in ruin, but has gained immortality in the children’s nursery rhyme “sur l’pont d’Avignon” as well as classification as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Avignon’s historic heritage continues at the 800 year old ramparts which surround the city centre and keep it separate from the Rhone River and the ring road. The majority of Avignon hotels and sights can be found within these walls, although there are a few chain hotels on the outskirts of the city too.
