Hotels in Alexandria

Hotels in Alexandria make a great base for an Egyptian holiday, offering a different perspective on the country than Cairo and Sharm El-Sheikh.

Reminders of the glorious past are everywhere you look in Alexandria, Egypt’s second city and the country’s window on the Mediterranean. Alexandria was once the capital of Egypt, and although much of its past glamour has now faded it’s still packed with culture and history, as well as plenty of great beach life. Boasting some of the best seafood restaurants in the country, Alexandria is also a fab destination for foodies.

The city’s history is as interesting as it is long. It was founded by Alexander the Great, it was home to the most famous library in history and the huge Pharos Lighthouse (one of the 7 Wonders of the World). The city was also the seat of Egypt’s most famous Queen, Cleopatra. Today Alexandria is a modern city, an important and cosmopolitan seaport which has a reputation as Egypt’s cultural capital thanks to the many artists who have set up home here.

Although the library was razed by marauders and the lighthouse succumbed to the elements, history is everywhere you look in Alexandria. The 15th Century Citadel of Qaitbay was built on the site of the famous Pharos Lighthouse, and today hosts an intriguing maritime museum. If you’re interested in ancient Egypt, visit the Cemetery of Mostafa Kamel which includes ornate tombs dating back more than 1200 years. There are catacombs to explore, a Roman Theatre to visit, and beautiful palaces.

One of the big draws to Alexandria is the sea. The lovely promenade (Corniche) is perfect for evening wanders, while the pavement cafes draw locals and tourists alike. Maa’moura Beach and Montazah Beach are popular with locals during the summer months, and you may have to pay a small fee to enter during the high season. On the beach you can either relax and sunbathe, or indulge in various water sports.

Accommodation in Alexandria is varied, with something to suit every style and budget. There are lots of big Western chain hotels represented in the city, and there are plenty of independent B&Bs and guesthouses too.  Whether you’re visiting on a tight budget or planning to splash some cash, you’re sure to find the perfect place to stay in Alexandria with Skyscanner.
