Unique historic town, no cars - pedestrian-only streets, nice restaurants, many shops and studios.

At the western end of the Costa Verde, Paraty is a great little town to just kick back, an easy 4-hour+ bus ride from Rio. For once the brochures didn't lie: Paraty is a great mixture of cultural tourism and jaw-dropping natural settings. You can relax strolling the cobbled streets of the colonial old town (a UNESCO World Heritage site) or rent a boat and explore the many islands in the bay, pushing as far as Ilha Grande if your heart desires. If outdoors activities are more of your thing, Paraty is also a sea kayaker's dream, with its cool waters, sandy beaches and nearby fishing villages. Most weekends in the summer (their summer), a huge tent is set up next to the Igreja Matriz in the main square and you can dance away the night to live samba.

Paraty is one of Brasils nicest colonial cities. it lies beautfully by the sea between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The small village of Trindade lies just 20 km west from Paraty. Don't miss this hippi paradise if you are in the area:).
