this is a small university town located about an hour away from Belo Horizonte, in the state of Mineas Gerais. what's unique about this town is the local Carnaval, which draws young people from all around the country, and is celebrated with a parade by the local Samba schools, with everyone on the streets joining in the party. i even learned how to Samba! :) the area is beautiful and we took lots of hikes and horse-back rides around. be sure to take a local guide! the mountains all around are rich with semi-precious stones and i kept finding small colorful rocks that were actually rose-quartz and aquamarines and the likes. almost nobody speaks English so communication can be difficult at times, but then you find someone local who's friendly and helpful and knows a few words and the next thing you know you have dinner with them at their place :) we loved it :)
