Hotels in Salzburg

With its baroque buildings, groovy arts scene, and musical history, Salzburg is a city that delights and surprises in equal measure.

Salzburg is a compact city, ideal for exploring on foot. Most of the main attractions can be found in the beautiful Altstadt (or old town), the heart of Salzburg’s tourist district. Unsurprisingly there are plenty of hotels in the area, which is ideal if you like to be right in the middle of the action. Manicured squares, spired churches and fortresses offer plenty to admire, and there’s no shortage of places to grab a coffee and cake afterwards.

If you want to see a grittier side of Salzburg, base yourself in Elisabeth-Vorstadt. Hotels in this neighbourhood are perfect if you’re planning a train journey, as it is right next to the main train station. There are lots of places to grab cheap eats, as well as low cost internet cafes: perfect if you need to print off a last minute boarding card.

Budget travellers will find a great range of low-cost hotels and hostels in Schallmoos. The southern part of the neighbourhood is within walking distance of the Altstadt, but there’s good public transport infrastructure if you find yourself staying further north. Schallmoos is fairly residential, so there aren’t many tourist attractions: although you do get a great view across to the Kapuzinerberg, the majestic hill which towers above the city.

Salzburg has a lengthy musical tradition. It’s the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music, after all. It’s normal to hear the strains of classical music pouring out of open windows in the Altstadt. The concert halls have a program of music which lasts all year, while there are small classical festivals in spring and autumn. The jewel in the musical crown is the Salzburg Festival, taking place during July and August, when classical performances take over the city. Hotel prices can rise during these dates, so unless you’re planning on attending the festival it might be worth rescheduling your trip.
