A grungy version of Paddington, and a little Thailand with over 30 well priced high quality Thai restaurants, gay and lesbian couples galore, it's a thriving vibrant village.

This formerly working class suburb in the heart of Sydney has been transformed into center of bohemian contemporary lifestyle. It's full of vintage shops, hair salons and a multitude of terrific ethnic restaurants. The nightlife is rich with concert venues, gallery openings and late night shopping. I most enjoy walking down King Street for some window shopping, or I may drop into a vintage store for a bargain. There's great service to downtown Sydney on the metro, so visit Newtown for some urban fun.

For a US based reference point. Newtown is to Sydney as the East Village is to NYC or the Mission is to SFO. Many Sydneysiders find Newtown "too" alternative. It is close to the University of Sydney but its not overrun with only students. Its also the unofficial LGBT HQ of Sydney or at least the lady-leaning gay area of Sydney. Great cheap and cheerful restaurant row that is as eclectic and tasty as it is affordable.

Gritty, ethnic, and punky, Newtown is the home of Sydney's counterculture and lesbian scene, and is full of good world food options (including literally 20 or more Thai restaurants) owing to its proximity to Sydney University. There are a host of great bars -- both biggies like the Newtown Hotel and 'small bars' like Corridor -- and enough dining and nightlife options to keep you entertained thru a half year's worth of weekends.
