Antigua is the very picture of summer paradise. Pure white sand, azure blue waters, and plenty of palm trees make it an excellent destination for beach bums of all ages. Add a dash of lively Caribbean culture, a splash of British hospitality, and plenty of high end resorts and you’ve got the recipe for a great summer holiday.

The relaxing beaches and pervading sense of luxury has made Antigua a favourite spot for honeymooners and celebrities. Oprah Winfrey owns a winter home on the island, as do Eric Clapton and Giorgio Armani. You might bump into them in one of the island’s many seafood restaurants, or at one of the famous Sunday night barbecues at the historic Shirley Heights lookout point.

There’s a beach for every day of the year in Antigua, with 365 sandy bays to relax on. The majority are lined by hotels and resorts, although there are some tranquil spots like Johnson’s Beach and Turner Beach. There’s plenty going on for families at Dickenson Bay, and Carlisle Bay is regarded as one of the best shores on the island. For water-sports head to the rougher waters of Half Moon Bay, for snorkelling head offshore to Prickly Pear Island, and for history head to English Harbour.

Cricket is serious business in Antigua, so don’t be surprised to spot locals holding impromptu matches on the beach: or really on any spare bit of ground that they can find. The only time cricket takes a break is during July and August, when the weather is just that bit too hot and the recreation ground in St John’s is taken over by a massive carnival.

Believe it or not, there are hotels to suit all budgets in Antigua. Although the island is best known for its luxurious accommodation options, there are some cheap hotels for those who don’t have cash to splash. Hotel prices jump between mid December and mid April, when the weather is generally dryer and cooler. Prices drop by up to a third outside this period, so there are some great deals to be found. September is hurricane season, so try to avoid it: apart from that you’re good to go.
