Known as the "city of one thousand steps" this ancient UNESCO town with steep cobbled streets in a very memorable place. The streets are so steep that one can literally place your foot on the roof top of a house, all of which are made of the same solid grey stone. A well preserved fort overlooks the town. It is a place with a strong mood and a feeling of "time standing still." Also, like to point out Albania is very inexpensive and the people I found terrific!

Gjirokastër is a city in southern Albania, with an old town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO has described it as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of large estate". The most notable sight includes the Gjirokastër Fortress, looming above the town. The city appears historical records dating back to 1336 (with a Greek name), as part of the Byzantine Empire. Today Gjirokaster is a fine place to stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere of the old buildings and cobbled streets and eat some hearty local food.
