This is a deep water port at a former cannery turned into museum, gift shops and restaurants. The town itself is walkable along the coast and they have a shuttle ($). Very small town but there are nesting eagles right in the middle of the town.

The town of Hoonah itself is very small and not touristy at all. If you go to Icy Strait Point, though, you'll find that it was basically only built for cruise ship tourists, and it just seems like a tourist trap. Instead of Icy Strait Point, try to venture into Hoonah, or get in on a tour. The people of Hoonah are truly amazing, as is their history and their (up till now) self-sustainability. It's a beautiful place.

The small coastal town of Xu.naa (Hoonah) is a welcome sight after being out in the wilderness for an extended period of time. It's not very touristy so don't expect a whole lot (which is actually a good thing), but it does have all the basic essentials and has easy access from the harbor. We only had a few hours of shore leave and the first thing we hit was the grocery/general store for some snacks and toiletries. Next we joined the guys, who after living and working on a "dry" research vessel for several weeks, had not surprisingly made their way to the local bar. If you want to experience the wilds of SE Alaska, but need to have some semblance of civilization nearby, consider Hoonah!
