We switched drivers in Dothan and got gas. It was about 11:30 at night and we planned to drive through Montgomery to stop in Birmingham for the night. The countryside before and after Dothan had an eerie, forlorn quality. Nothing like the Florida Panhandle, from which we'd come and much more charming, but it seemed like everywhere we looked, we saw tiny white churches, wooden shacks and impenetrable stands of forest, decked with beards of Spanish moss. Dothan, on the other hand, was clearly the biggest town around for 50 miles or more. Lots of chains but also nicer places and some handsome new real estate developments.
I enjoyed the military aviation museum.
