I’ve visited Carlisle a few times when passing through. If you’re making the drive down south it’s a great stop-off point, with a decent amount to explore. I’m not sure I’d make a trip here specifically through.

Friendly small city. Good to stay over for a night, but besides a castle, and a museum, not so much to do.

Great, livable city at the Scottish/English border. Close to Hadrian's Wall and a good jumping off point for the Lake District. Nice cathedral and impressive castle too.
