Blantyre is Malawi's biggest city, and there are lots to do! Spend a day exploring the local markets, shop for fabrics, try some fruit and some famous Malawian coffee. The city also has a plethora of restaurants and clubs to choose from to keep you entertained in the evenings. I highly recommend Mibawa Cafe if you are into poetry slams. The city is also a great place to base yourself for day trips to nearby places like the Nyika Plateau.
The city of Blantyre, in the South, is the oldest European settlement in Malawi, predating neighbouring African capitals Harare, Lusaka, Nairobi and Johannesburg. Whilst Lilongwe is Malawi’s capital, Blantyre retains the air of a true city, and is often referred to as the commercial capital. It’s a 3-hour drive between both. Set in a fertile valley ringed by ranges of mountains, Blantyre’s climate is temperate. It is a fun city as it is frantically busy, edgy and exciting. Spend a day or two exploring malls, restaurants and nightlife. Blantyre is a springboard for the remote Mulanje massif and the Lower Shire Valley.
