Gorontalo is a small town in the North of Sulawesi Island. It is reachable by flight either from Makassar or Manado (silkair flies 4 times a week from Singapore to Manado). I like this sleepy and small town because of its numerous and beautiful diving sites. Even though the scenery is beautiful, I find it difficult to recommend this place to non-divers or non-outdoor lovers

The only reason you'd be in Gorontalo is in transit to or, more likely, from the Togean Islands. It's the place to pick up cash (no shortage of ATMs here) and break your journey on the way up to Manado (another 10 hours north by bus -- a hard ride if you've just taken the uncomfortable overnight ferry). That said, it's not a bad place, and the area by the harbor, with its sea breezes, is actually quite pretty if you find yourself here for a day.
