Many travelers use Athens as a place to check off some ruins and head to the islands. Personally, I loved spending a more significant amount of time exploring the city. I recommend it for female travelers, too, and backpackers can find hostels here.

Greece takes forever to explore, yet only a moment to fall in love with. From the capital Athens to the most remote of islands or mountain villages, this country is full of charm, charisma and surprises. Been going there for years and every time it feels more and more like coming home.

Some people love it, some people hate on it. The biggest thing to know - don't get a hotel near the port. Syntagma square? That's a central spot and you can stroll to nearby streets lined with fun bars, cafes, and restaurants. Kolonaki? Even better - one of the posh or upscale neighborhoods and you will be at ease. So if you plan out a nice hotel or Airbnb then I think you will love the city. The people are laid back, there's a great coffee culture, make sure you sit back and enjoy! Don't try and see everything all in one day. If you will hike to the top of the Acropolis - go earlier in the morning and avoid the hottest part of the day. All in all, it's a special city with graffiti all over but it's got some character and plenty of leafy streets and fun cafes and bars.
