Since 2003 Ivalo has served as a gateway to northern Lapland with it's small airport. Although it only has a small population of 4,000, it has a few services that the traveler will need, such as grocery markets and petrol station. 30 kilometers south of Ivalo is a resort named Saariselkä, a popular place for visitors to do downhill and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, dog sledge riding and for summer activities like trekking and hiking in the Saariselkä fjells and canoeing on the many lakes and rivers.
