Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport – popularly known as Denpasar International Airport – is 13 kilometres south of Denpasar, in southern Bali. The airport is very close to most of the main tourist areas in Bali – north of the airport is Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Umalas, Canggu and Tanah Lot; while Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Pecatu, Uluwatu and Ungasan are to the south.
There is one runway at Denpasar airport and the international and domestic terminals are next to each other. The domestic airport is in the old building and the international airport is in the L shaped terminal. The airport has 18 gates in all – 8 in the domestic terminal and 10 in the international terminal. The buildings are a short walk along a covered path away from each other.
The Terminal is spread over three floors – the lower floor is for arrivals, the one above that is for departures and the top most floor is for commercial and catering outlets as well as airport offices. The departures area has 62 check in counters.
The Domestic Terminal has 62 check in counters, 4 counters that cater to transit and transfer, 19 ticketing counters, 8 gates for boarding and 7 gates for arrivals.
There is a fleet of buses that is used to transport passengers to and from low cost airlines which don't use the aerobridge. The terminals also have smoking rooms, prayer areas, massage and shower services, lounges as well as children's play areas.
There are two lounges at international departures – Garuda Lounge and JAS Premier Lounge. Garuda is also present at the domestic terminal. Both terminals have free Wi-Fi access.
When you get to Denpasar, you will emerge in the arrivals hall on the ground floor. Go on to immigration; there are two sections – one being visa-on-arrival and the other one being non visa-on-arrival. Expect long queues or skip the line with Bali Fast Track for USD 25 to USD 40. The official taxi counter is located right outside the arrival hall to the right.
Denpasar is well connected by bus – large mini buses as well as full size buses ply from most parts of the island. Air-conditioned buses of Trans Sarbagita Company operate between 5 in the morning till 9 at night at intervals of about 15 minutes.
There is regular shuttle and taxi service available from all over the coastline to the airport. You must check with the hotel you are staying at since most hotels operate a regular airport shuttle.
Official taxis leave from right outside arrivals. They operate on a fixed price system according to your destination. Taxis have to be paid in cash, so it is advisable to go to the money changer at the airport for some local currency before getting to the taxi counter. There are no metered taxis at the airport. Car rental services are also available at both the domestic as well as the international terminals.
The first floor of the domestic terminal has a line of ATM machines of national banks. The international terminal also has multiple bank counters with ATM machines as well as a number of money changer counters.
There is one large car park that is dedicated to Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport. It is located next to the terminal buildings. There are about 2,000 parking spaces available in the lot, with options for short-term as well as long-term parking.
There are a number of parking options at Denpasar Airport –
If you are meeting someone off a flight, you can park in the short-term parking, which is available in the airport car park. Rates for short term parking are higher than rates for long-term parking. If you are dropping a passenger off, it would be advisable to go to the designated drop off zone instead which is free of cost.
Long-term parking facility is available for people who wish to park their vehicles for a number of days. The parking lot for long-term parking is the same as used for short-term parking.
Specially reserved spots are maintained for disabled drivers in the same car park. These spaces are located close to the exit and entry of the car park for the convenience of the user. Passengers who require assistance from the car park to the terminal are advised to get in touch with their airline in advance.
