Flights to Palermo

Airports in Palermo

Falcone–Borsellino International Airport (PMO) is the main airport serving Palermo, and is 22 miles outside of the city near Punta Raisi. It’s one of Italy’s busiest airports, handling over four million passengers each year.

The airport takes its name from two judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who were executed by the mafia in 1992. Look out for the sculpted plaque outside the which bears an image of the two judges, accompanied by a legend which reads (in Italian): “Giovanni Falcone – Paolo Borsellino – The Others – The Pride of the New Sicily”.

Getting into Palermo

The Prestia e Comande Bus runs from the airport to Palermo every day and takes around 55 minutes to reach the central station. The bus leaves the airport every half hour, starting at 6:30am. Buses from Palermo are similarly scheduled, with the first bus to the airport leaving the bus station at 5am. A ticket on the bus costs €5.80 (around £4.60).

Taxis are also available at the arrival gate. The journey takes 45 minutes by car, and costs around €35 (about £28) if the meter is switched on. If they don’t have a meter, be prepared to negotiate.

If you want to see a bit of Sicily, or if you’re staying in a country villa outside Palermo, hiring a car is a good option. Europcar, Avis, Hertz and Autoeuropa all operate from the airport.
